Few fully understand the significance of Virginians to America 's freedom and the role of the Commonwealth's Founding Fathers. Many of those men were from our area of Amherst and Albemarle Counties (Nelson in those days was a part of Amherst County having recently been split from Big Albemarle County .) Many of the events that led to the American Revolution happened in Virginia 's House of Burgesses with firebrands like Patrick Henry and the Cabells who were outspoken Patriots.

One of the most enjoyable ways to understand and appreciate this colorful tapestry of the most influential chapters of American history is by recreating the “passion” of those days with actors on stage. The Wintergreen Nature Foundation and the Historical Society of Nelson County invite you Nelson County High School for three performances this winter. We welcome you in the tradition of the forefathers as you step back into times that “tried the souls of men”.

The Times That Tried The Souls of Men

Saturday January 26th 7pm

Our forefathers were faced with many choices that eventually led to the American Revolution. Experience the powerful debate by prominent Virginians from our region that raged in these early days resulting in the dissolution of the House of Burgesses and the march to war with England.

Virginia’s Leadership & the Struggles of a New Nation

Saturday February 9th 7pm

Many prominent Virginians thought the new national government and the original version of the Constitution being proposed was no better than the tyranny of England. The protest of these men in the Constitutional Congress and the Virginia Convention came close to blocking the ratification of the Constitution and, in large part, resulted in George Mason drafting the Bill of Rights. Ratification debate was passionate in Virginia’s new General Assembly. One debate was so heated that, were it not for Amhearst’s Colonel William Cabell, the event would likely have resulted in a duel between Governor Edmund Randolph and former governor, Patrick Henry.

A Time of Celebration

Saturday February 23rd 7pm

The social life in Williamsburg and the surrounding countryside showcased Virginians love of music and dance. Tuckahoe musician Joseph Ayers will charm his audience with historic moments in music as he performs with a variety of instruments of the period.

If there is a question concerning inclement weather, please call 434-325-8169 12pm-5pm on the day of the performance.
