Summer Fun for Families and Children

Enjoy summer fun in the great outdoors with The Wintergreen Nature Foundation.

Family Fun

Journey on the James
Date: Thursday, July 1
Time: 9am-5pm
Cost: $70 member pairs, $80 nonmember pairs

Enjoy a day on Virginia 's own scenic James River . Parent-child teams will learn basic canoeing skills by boating down this gentle stretch of water. Along the way, we'll break for a shoreline picnic and explore some of the plants and animals that call the river home. Bring a bagged lunch, plenty of water, and a change of clothes.

Summer Jubilee
Date: Saturday, July 3
Time: 10am-6pm
Costs vary for each activity

Welcome the summer season with fun and excitement for all! The Trillium House transforms into a family carnival of nature crafts, snacks, games, hikes, entertainment, and prizes. Create a crafting masterpiece, hit the trails for adventure throughout the day, and take in Barefoot Puppets as they again enlighten the whole family with their always-popular, side-splittingly fun puppet shows. New this year is First Annual Duck Race - sponsor your duck today to support the Robin's Nook children's play area and enjoy the spectacle of rubber ducks over the falls. Perfect for the whole family.

Night Hike
Date: Saturday, August 7
Time: 8pm-10pm
Cost: $10 members, $15 nonmembers

Explore the world of the woods after dark with this non-scary walk for parents and children. Simple activities will help us better understand the creatures that are active at night as well as our own responses to the dark. Bring a flashlight or share one of ours.

Birdie Buddies
Date: Saturday, June 12
Time: 9am – 11am
Cost: $15 members, $20 nonmembers

Make friends with your feathered neighbors. We’ll hit the trail with fun games along the way to get us better acquainted with the birds of Wintergreen and bird biology. Dress for the outdoors, ages 4-6.

Hello Herps
Date: Saturday, July 24
Time: 9am – 11am
Cost: $15 members, $20 nonmembers

Herps are reptiles and amphibians – and they are really neat. Play some fun games, listen to a funny story, and meet some real live animals. Dress for the outdoors, ages 4-6.

Geocaching
Date: Saturday, September 4
Time: 9am – 11am
Cost: $15 members, $20 nonmembers

Celebrate Labor Day with the popular challenge of geocaching. Explore how a GPS works and find an actual geocache. Dress for the outdoors, ages 4-6.

WILD! Adventurers

Wings over Wintergreen
Date: Saturday, June 12
Time: 1pm – 4pm
Cost: $20 members, $25 nonmembers

Birds, and bugs, and bats – oh my! Take off into the world of all animals flying through the Wintergreen woods. Fun games in the great outdoors will help us explore the biology of some of our flying neighbors and paper airplanes will help us figure out the physics of how flight works for these animals. Dress for the outdoors, ages 7-12.

Herp, Herp Hooray!
Date: Saturday, July 24
Time: 1pm – 4pm
Cost: $20 members, $25 nonmembers

Reptiles and amphibians are some of the neatest animals in the Wintergreen woods. Fun games and real live herps help us see what makes them so cool. Learn about some troubles herps face and simple things you can do to help them. Dress for the outdoors, ages 7-12.

Geocache Genius
Date: Saturday, September 4
Time: 1pm – 4pm
Cost: $20 members, $25 nonmembers

Participate in the whole process of geocaching, from beginning to end. Seek out nearby geocaches and be part of creating a brand-new geocache at Wintergreen. Bring your GPS unit or use one of ours. Dress for the outdoors, ages 7-12.

WILD! Explorers

Summer Campout
Date/Time: Friday, August 20, 1pm - Saturday, August 21, noon
Cost: $100 members, $120 nonmembers

Enjoy an overnight backpacking trip at beautiful Crabtree Falls . Hike up the tallest waterfall in the eastern United States and spend the night under the stars in Crabtree Meadows. A cookout dinner, a campfire, a night program, an outdoor breakfast, and more! Register early as space is very limited. Bring a sleeping bag and your personal items. Registration deadline is Saturday, August 14. Ages 7-10.
