The Waters of Wintergreen2011 Winter Lecture SeriesDates: March 19 and 26 As time passes, the availability, the purity, and the runoff impact of water becomes a topic of essential discussion, locally, regionally and globally. Water is perhaps our most essential natural resource. A local biologist once said " A potential gasoline shortage is nothing compared to a potential water shortage" Water is a critical issue at Wintergreen for many reasons. Most essential is the demand for residential use. This is closely followed by the commercial needs for golf and ski facilities. Storm water management is also a critical issue within the Wintergreen Community, and is compounded by mountain development. When mountain canopy is broken and replaced by impervious surfaces such as roofs and roadways, in addition to ski slopes and golf courses, runoff is greatly accelerated.
