various Spring Wildflower Symposium
Eastern Appalachian forests, by virtue of their rugged coves, their deep stream carved gorges and precipitous rock faces and escarpments, host some of our greatest remaining natural terrestrial ecosystems. An abundance of tree diversity, ancient wildflower gardens, relict fern beds and scenic vistas provide diverse and colorful backdrops in the window of warm spring sunlight. There is no better time or place to celebrate the beauty of this natural wonder than in Virginias Blue Ridge in May. We are pleased to welcome those who love nature as we hike, birdwatch, learn the wildflowers and how to grow them, and explore geology from both traditional and new instructors whose work helps us better understand, appreciate and protect our natural heritage. Join us for the Spring Wildflower Symposium. Look for the brochure with a detailed schedule of events in your mailbox in March or online at www.twnf.org/programs/wfs.asp.

Join Liz on an exciting two day adventure as we explore Southwestern Virginia. We’ll bike a portion of the Virginia Creeper Trail, hike an absolutely gorgeous section of the Mount Rogers area, having adventures and making memories along the way. We’ll see wildflowers, ponies (yes, you read correctly) and learn a little about the ecology of the area. We will bike 17 miles of the trail, ALL DOWNHILL, through thickets of rhododendron, across bridges and along the countryside. There are stops along the way for cold drinks, restrooms and a bit of history… not to mention ice cream. If you’ve traveled with Liz before, you know that no trip of hers is complete without amazing food and she will always weave chocolate into any trip. We’ll stay in downtown Abingdon at the Martha Hotel & Spa. From Liz, “I did this trip a few years ago on my own and it has always been a trip I hoped to one day share with our members”. People have no idea that three hours away from them is such a cool weekend getaway. For a detailed itinerary and cost information, please visit www.twnf.org/programs/swvatrip.asp. Contact Liz at 325-7451 with any questions.
